Rabanne 1 Million Black with pineapple and vanilla imagery

Rabanne 1 Million Black: Don’t Judge the Bottle

There are perfume bottles designed to whisper good taste. Rabanne 1 Million Black has clearly chosen a louder approach. Let’s face it, Linda. But thankfully, what matter the most is the liquid inside that bottle, so, let’s see what Rabanne has in store for us.

The latest addition to the 1 Million universe arrives dressed in glossy black and gold, complete with an oversized ornamental “1” that makes the original gold-bar bottle look almost restrained. Subtle it is not. Then again, subtlety has never exactly been the point of 1 Million.

More interesting is what is inside. Created by Christophe Raynaud and Quentin Bisch, Rabanne 1 Million Black takes the familiar boldness of the line and builds it around a tropical freshness accord, a trio of vanillas and ebony woods.

A New Chapter for 1 Million

Launched in 2026, 1 Million Black is positioned as a new evolution of the franchise that began with the original 1 Million in 2008. Rabanne describes the fragrance as woody, sensual and opulent, with the idea of intensity replacing the more literal image of material success that defined the original era.

There is also a nice bit of continuity behind the composition. Christophe Raynaud was one of the perfumers behind the original 1 Million, and here he returns to the line alongside Quentin Bisch. Nearly two decades later, Black therefore feels less like an unrelated name extension and more like another chapter in a story Raynaud helped start.

What Does Rabanne 1 Million Black Smell Like?

The official structure is deliberately concise: a tropical freshness accord in the opening, a trio of vanilla notes at the heart and ebony woods in the base.

The tropical opening is the part that immediately changes the mood. Pineapple gives the fragrance a juicy, bright lift before the sweeter vanilla character begins to take over. The ebony woods then provide a darker frame underneath the composition.

On paper, three vanillas inside a 1 Million bottle could sound like a warning rather than a fragrance pyramid. In practice, the tropical contrast keeps the opening from falling immediately into the dense sweetness one might expect from the line.

We’ve Already Smelled It

Having already tried Rabanne 1 Million Black from samples, our first impression is reassuringly familiar but not entirely predictable.

This is still very much Rabanne territory: bold, powerful and unapologetically present. The pineapple opening, however, makes a real difference. Its fruity freshness cuts through some of the sweetness that usually characterizes the 1 Million line, making the fragrance immediately more pleasant and a little easier to approach.

It does not suddenly turn 1 Million into a minimalist skin scent, nor should anyone expect it to. The DNA remains loud. Black simply gives that familiar intensity a brighter opening and a better sense of contrast.

And yes, the juice is considerably more appealing than the bottle suggests.

Christophe Raynaud and Quentin Bisch

1 Million Black reunites two Givaudan perfumers with an established connection to the Rabanne universe.

Christophe Raynaud brings an especially important link to the history of the line as one of the creators of the original 1 Million. Quentin Bisch, meanwhile, has become a recurring presence across contemporary Rabanne and Jean Paul Gaultier perfumery, with a catalogue that has made him one of the most visible perfumers of his generation.

Together, they give Black enough familiarity to remain recognizably Million while pushing the formula toward a fresher tropical contrast.

Quentin Bisch is also behind another recent Rabanne release, Brutalist Amber, created with Daniela Andrier and built around the contrast between metallic patchouli and bitter almond.

The Bottle Is… A Lot

There is no diplomatic way around this one.

1 Million has never been shy, but Black takes the visual language somewhere impressively extravagant. The glossy black front, gold sides and enormous decorative numeral turn the bottle into something halfway between a perfume flacon, a trophy and an object found in the VIP room of a nightclub where nobody knows what time it is.

Whether that is fabulous or atrocious will depend entirely on your tolerance for excess. Rabanne clearly knows what it is doing: the bottle is impossible to ignore, and being impossible to ignore has always been part of the Million identity.

Davide Parfums Take

1 Million Black is a useful reminder that judging a perfume by its bottle can occasionally backfire.

The fragrance itself remains powerful and unmistakably Rabanne, so anyone hoping for a complete reinvention of the Million DNA will not find it here. What works is the pineapple-led opening, which brings enough freshness to soften the line’s usual sweetness and makes the composition more enjoyable than its maximalist presentation might suggest.

The bottle? We may need more time. Possibly several years.

Still keeping up? Neither are we.
