JUSBOX Off the Cuff: Jazz, Vinyl and the Art of Improvisation
| Editorial note: This article is a first look at JUSBOX Off the Cuff based on information released by the brand. It is not a fragrance review. Personal impressions will only be added after testing the fragrance. |
There are fragrances inspired by songs, musicians, entire decades and very specific moments in pop culture. JUSBOX has built pretty much its whole identity around the connection between music and scent, so a perfume inspired by jazz improvisation feels almost inevitable.
For 2026, the Italian house introduces Off the Cuff, a new woody amber Eau de Parfum created by Bruno Jovanovic.
And, appropriately enough, the idea behind it is basically: stop planning everything.
Which, for anyone whose life currently consists of calendars, notifications and seventeen browser tabs open at once, sounds almost suspiciously radical.
No Script Required
The expression off the cuff refers to doing or saying something spontaneously, without preparation.

That idea becomes the starting point for the fragrance. JUSBOX looks to jazz and, more specifically, to improvisation: the moment when technique stops being something rigid and becomes instinct.
The inspiration also has a personal dimension for founders Chiara and Andrea Valdo. According to the brand, their relationship with jazz grew from memories of their father, his stories about concerts and the records he kept at home.
So this isn’t simply “jazz club aesthetics” pasted onto a bottle. The reference comes from family memories, dusty vinyl and the experience of discovering music through someone else.
And yes, there is actually a vinyl accord in the perfume. We will get to that.
What Does JUSBOX Off the Cuff Smell Like?
On paper, Off the Cuff starts considerably brighter than its dark jazz-club concept might suggest.
Bergamot and lime form the opening, before the fragrance moves into a heart built around cistus essence, cypress and Vinyl Record Nature Print™.
The latter is easily the detail that makes Off the Cuff stand out on a notes list that could otherwise have gone in a much more conventional woody-amber direction.
The base combines styrax, sandalwood, cedarwood and Amberever™, pushing the composition towards something warmer, resinous and woody. JUSBOX describes the result as dry yet enveloping, with the vinyl accord adding a tactile, slightly rough quality to the composition.

Bruno Jovanovic Behind the Composition
JUSBOX Off the Cuff was composed by Bruno Jovanovic, who has already worked with the brand on fragrances including Wave of Freedom.
Here the assignment seems particularly appropriate: build a fragrance around spontaneity without making the composition feel random.
Because improvisation isn’t really about having no structure. Anyone who has listened to good jazz for more than three minutes knows that. You need the structure first so you can decide exactly when to ignore it.
That tension between precision and instinct is probably the most interesting part of the Off the Cuff concept.
Whether the fragrance itself manages to smell as spontaneous as the story suggests is something that can only be established on skin.
And Then There Is the Bottle
JUSBOX has never exactly tried to hide the music references in its packaging, and Off the Cuff continues the tradition.
The familiar square bottle appears here in burgundy-red glass, topped with JUSBOX’s unmistakable record-shaped cap. The color was chosen to recall the atmosphere of jazz clubs: velvet, dim lighting and that particular shade of red apparently mandated by international law whenever someone mentions jazz after sunset.

The presentation goes further with graphic artwork inspired by records and musical imagery.
Subtle? Absolutely not.
Appropriate for JUSBOX? Completely.
And in this case the design works particularly well with the story behind the fragrance. Rather than simply putting another color on an existing bottle, Off the Cuff looks like part of the concept.

First Thoughts
Off the Cuff has one thing working in its favor before the bottle is even opened: the concept and the composition actually seem connected.
Jazz, improvisation and vinyl could very easily have become three paragraphs of marketing followed by a completely unrelated vanilla-amber fragrance. Instead, the citrus opening, resinous cistus, woods and especially the unusual vinyl accord at least suggest that the perfume was developed with the story in mind.
And frankly, Vinyl Record Nature Print™ is exactly the kind of weird note that makes me want to smell something.
Whether it genuinely evokes a record, warm plastic, dusty sleeves, a dark jazz club or absolutely none of the above remains to be discovered.
For now, Off the Cuff looks like one of JUSBOX’s more intriguing recent releases, especially for anyone who likes woody, resinous fragrances but wants something slightly stranger hiding between the usual amber and sandalwood.
Sometimes having no script works.
Although I still wouldn’t recommend the approach for tax returns.
