Initio Oud for Grace arrives with a bold claim tucked inside a quiet name. The Black Gold Project has long spoken in the language of conquest, intensity and power. Grace changes the vocabulary. Initio presents it as a controlled, contemporary expression of oud – one designed to command without display. Whether that idea survives contact with skin is another matter, and one this preview cannot yet answer.

A new chapter in the Black Gold Project
Oud for Grace joins Oud for Greatness, Oud for Greatness Neo and Oud for Happiness within Initio’s Black Gold Project. The brand now presents them as four expressions of oud united by one vision of power. Grace’s distinction, at least within that official narrative, is to replace overt conquest with composure: authority that, in Initio’s words, does not need to prove itself.
That does not tell us whether the fragrance will actually smell quieter or feel more restrained on skin. It does, however, give the launch a clearer point of view than simply adding a fourth oud to the series. The change of language is the most interesting thing about Initio Oud for Grace before a single drop has been tested.
A contemporary interpretation of oud
Initio frames Oud for Grace as ancestral oud filtered through what the brand describes as a contemporary molecular construction: a way of keeping the material’s depth while, at least on paper, controlling its edges. This is Initio’s own positioning, not an olfactory conclusion Davide Parfums can confirm.
Whether “contemporary” translates into something genuinely lighter on skin, or simply a more polished version of the same density, is exactly the kind of question that only wearing the fragrance can answer.
Initio Oud for Grace notes
Initio lists vanilla, praline, bergamot, black pepper, sandalwood, cedarwood, guaiac wood and oud among the main notes of Initio Oud for Grace. In its campaign language, bergamot brings clarity, black pepper tension, woods and oud structure, while vanilla and praline introduce warmth. These are roles assigned by the brand, not sensory conclusions reached by Davide Parfums, and Initio presents the materials as a set rather than as a formal pyramid.
Fragrantica, by contrast, organizes the same materials into a conventional pyramid: bergamot in the top, praline and black pepper in the heart, and vanilla, cedar, oud, sandalwood and guaiac wood in the base. That structure comes from Fragrantica’s own listing, not from Initio, which prefers a looser, less hierarchical description of the same materials.
The genuinely interesting question sits underneath both descriptions: whether praline and vanilla round off the oud without turning it into another interchangeable dessert.
Sweetness without surrendering authority
There is something almost funny about the proposition: after years of a campaign built on conquest, oud now has to sit down with praline and negotiate. On paper, vanilla and praline introduce the possibility of gourmand warmth, while black pepper promises tension. Whether those roles remain distinct once the fragrance reaches skin is still unknown.
The question, unanswerable from a product page, is whether that sweetness stays a supporting note or eventually takes over the conversation. Plenty of self-described “controlled gourmands” promise restraint and then behave like dessert within the hour. Whether Oud for Grace manages the difference is, again, something only skin will tell.
The five forces behind the bottle
The bottle carries a golden emblem inspired by the Tree of Life, built around five forces Initio names as Life, Presence, Intuition, Will and Elevation. It is the kind of symbolism the brand leans on across the Black Gold Project, and here it is doing the same job in miniature: reinforcing an idea of alignment and control rather than spectacle.
Based on the official imagery, the bottle itself follows the collection’s familiar dark glass and gold detailing, with the five-forces emblem as its clearest visual link to Grace’s more composed positioning within the range.
What remains to be tested
A brand page can describe intention. It cannot confirm outcome. What Initio Oud for Grace actually does on skin remains an open list of questions rather than a settled set of facts: how present the oud genuinely is, whether the praline stays subtle or becomes the main event, whether bergamot really lifts the structure or simply opens it, whether the whole thing reads as controlled or just quieter, and what meaningfully separates it from Oud for Greatness beyond the marketing copy.
Price, size and availability
Initio Oud for Grace launches as an Eau de Parfum in a single 90ml bottle, listed at €320 on the brand’s European site at the time of writing. Both price and availability can change after launch, so anyone planning to buy should confirm current figures directly with Initio or an authorized retailer.
The language around Oud for Greatness wanted the room. The language around Initio Oud for Grace appears more interested in owning it without asking for attention. Whether the fragrance fulfills that promise is now a question for skin. For a very different current answer to the ‘what do we do with oud now?’ question, Acqua di Parma’s Oud Ambrosia is worth reading alongside this one: two houses, arriving at almost opposite conclusions about the same raw material.
