Calé Thesaurus: Saffron, Iris and Sandalwood Become an Invisible Treasure
Calé Thesaurus, the 2026 release from the Italian house, immediately feels like a study in contrasts, moving between aromatic brightness and a darker, more textured character.
Created by Mark Buxton and presented at Esxence 2026, Thesaurus brings together saffron, iris and Australian sandalwood, then surrounds them with spices, flowers, milky textures, fruit, woods and musks. On paper it sounds like a fragrance that may need its own filing system. The concept, however, is far more introspective than the note list suggests.
A treasure that cannot be owned
The name comes from the ancient idea of a treasury, but Calé is not interested in gold, jewels or another luxury campaign pretending that personal growth happens beside an infinity pool (thank God!). Thesaurus is built around the idea that the rarest treasure is what we become through knowledge, experience and time.
That slow transformation is reflected in the structure of the fragrance. It begins with brighter, sharper materials, moves through a creamy and spicy heart, then settles into a warm woody base. Saffron, iris and sandalwood act as the central trio, each concealing its most valuable part beneath the surface, in a rhizome, a root or the heart of a trunk.
What does Calé Thesaurus smell like?
The opening combines saffron, iris, bergamot, carrot seed, ambrette and davana. The contrast should be immediate: the cool, earthy and buttery character of iris against the metallic, bittersweet heat of saffron. Carrot seed reinforces the dry rootiness, while bergamot adds light before everything becomes more textured.
The heart is where the composition becomes almost suspiciously generous and intriguing. Milk, coconut milk, cream, cinnamon, nutmeg and peach meet magnolia, rose oxide and karo karounde. Despite this menu, early descriptions suggest something closer to soft suede and spiced milky tea than a literal gourmand dessert. Which is reassuring, because coconut milk has already attended enough perfume launches this year.
Australian sandalwood, Haitian vetiver, white musk and ambergris form the base. The expected result is warm, powdery and softly smoky, with the sandalwood giving stability to the more mineral and leathery facets of the fragrance.
A modern leather fragrance without the theatre?
Initial impressions from Esxence described Thesaurus as a contemporary leather scent with a soft, sandy texture. The leather effect does not come from a single declared note. It appears through the interaction of saffron, iris, woods, spices and the slightly metallic facets running through the composition.
That makes Thesaurus more compelling than its enormous pyramid initially suggests. It appears to acknowledge current preferences for milky, cocooning fragrances while resisting the urge to become another sweet cloud with a philosophical press release attached.
Is Calé Thesaurus worth trying?
Without wearing it on skin, this is not a review and there will be no dramatic verdict delivered from a note list. Still, Thesaurus looks genuinely interesting. Mark Buxton, an Italian niche house and a structure built around iris, saffron and sandalwood are already enough to justify a sample.
It should appeal most to people who enjoy powdery iris, refined leather, warm spices and creamy woods, especially when they want texture without obvious sweetness. At this point I think this release could be considered a personal attack… Anyone hoping for a tropical coconut milkshake may wish to redirect the emergency toward a different bottle.
