LUMI CIAO: When a Simple Hello Becomes Perfume

LUMI CIAO perfume begins with one of the smallest words in the Italian language and, according to the people behind it, one of the largest consequences: hello.

For LUMI founders Luana Piroli and Michele Lorenzin, that particular hello was exchanged on a staircase. There was a look, the warm suggestion of almond and amber in the air, and one of those apparently ordinary moments that only reveals its importance later. From it came a relationship, a shared life, artistic projects and, eventually, a fragrance.

This is not a review. I have not smelled CIAO yet, so everything below is based on LUMI’s official product information, the brand’s direct launch presentation and the official Pitti Fragranze exhibitor listing. Florence will get to provide the blotter – and, ideally, the skin test.

A fragrance born from a memory

Most perfume launches begin with a creative brief. CIAO begins with a recollection: a greeting that became the first line of a much longer story. The brand calls it ‘the perfume that made us fall in love’, but the idea is deliberately wider than autobiography.

A hello can start a romance, an unexpected friendship, a reconciliation or a return. It can be said without thought and remembered for years. LUMI uses that universality as the emotional frame for the fragrance, turning a common word into something intimate without pretending that only one kind of relationship deserves to be commemorated.

That is an appealing premise because perfume and memory are already suspiciously close collaborators. We may forget the exact words spoken in a room, yet a trace of almond, fabric, skin or warm resin can preserve the entire atmosphere. The LUMI CIAO perfume is built around that mechanism: not a grand declaration, but the sensory residue of the moment before the story became important.

LUMI CIAO perfume notes

LUMI classifies CIAO as a gourmand Eau de Parfum. Its official structure is concise and coherent with the story: almond and heliotrope in the opening, vanilla and amber in the heart, and amber woods in the base.

The almond is presented as soft and vibrant rather than bitter, while heliotrope should reinforce its powdery, almost tactile character. Vanilla and amber then move the idea toward warmth and intimacy before amber woods give the composition a deeper, more persistent foundation.

On paper, the LUMI CIAO perfume suggests a composition concerned more with texture than contrast: creamy, powdery and resinous materials arranged to move from tenderness into warmth. It also places CIAO squarely inside contemporary gourmand territory without relying on a complete pastry counter of edible notes. Whether the almond feels like marzipan, warm skin, cosmetic powder or something less predictable can only be answered after testing.

The bottle smiles before the perfume speaks

The LUMI CIAO perfume arrives in the sculptural visual language the house has developed around art and fragrance. The 50 ml bottle is an opaque white rectangle topped by a black spherical cap. On the front, two heart-like eyes, the handwritten word CIAO and a curved smile make the object feel simultaneously naïve, affectionate and slightly mischievous.

The design avoids the usual vocabulary of gourmand perfume. There is no gilded dessert dome and no attempt to make almond look aristocratic. Instead, the bottle resembles a quick drawing preserved as an object – which suits a fragrance about an unplanned word and the life that followed it.

The official imagery surrounds it with almonds, heliotrope flowers, vanilla pods and amber-colored resin. It may be the rare visual campaign in which the note pyramid has apparently arranged its own still life, but the result is effective: warm, tactile and immediately legible.

CIAO arrives at Pitti Fragranze 2026

LUMI will officially present CIAO at Pitti Fragranze in Florence, held from 11 to 13 September 2026 at Stazione Leopolda. The official exhibitor listing places the brand at stand B/56.

That timing makes the launch particularly useful for anyone attending the fair. Instead of trying to interpret a gourmand structure from a screen, visitors will be able to smell the fragrance, meet Luana and Michele and hear the personal story directly from the people who lived it.

If you are planning the fair too, my broader guide to Pitti Fragranze 2026 is the sensible place to begin before our noses stop behaving sensibly.

What I want to discover on skin

The most interesting question is how CIAO balances familiarity and personality. Almond, heliotrope, vanilla and amber can produce something wonderfully comforting, but they can also drift into a soft-focus sweetness that becomes difficult to distinguish from the rest of the gourmand crowd.

I want to know whether the almond retains texture, whether the heliotrope gives the fragrance an elegant powdery lift, and whether the amber woods create real depth beneath the creaminess. I also want to discover whether the intimate love story remains visible once the marketing copy disappears and the perfume is simply sitting on skin.

Until then, the correct position is curiosity rather than verdict. CIAO has a clear concept, a note structure that supports it and a bottle with more personality than several entire fragrance campaigns. Now it has to smell as memorable as the staircase that inspired it.

Formats, price and availability

At the time of writing, LUMI lists CIAO in 2 ml, 10 ml and 50 ml formats. The 50 ml Eau de Parfum is priced at EUR 98 on the brand’s Italian website. Because prices and availability can change, the official product page remains the best place to confirm the current options.

For now, CIAO earns a place on the Pitti list. A fragrance about a single word that changed two lives deserves at least one word in return when I reach stand B/56.

Ciao, obviously.
