Tom Ford Ombré Leather Reserve Review: Sexy Leather and Terrible Financial Decisions
Some perfumes need time before they make sense.
Tom Ford Ombré Leather Reserve needed approximately three seconds.
I tested the latest addition to the Ombré Leather family from a 3 ml sample prepared for me at a perfumery. Apparently, Mr. Tom Ford is not particularly generous when it comes to fragrance samples, which is slightly unfortunate considering that, in my case, a sample has an alarming tendency to become a full-size bottle shortly afterwards.
And this one may have created another problem for my bank account. Please pretend to be surprised.
First Impression: New Leather, Immediately
Tom Ford Ombré Leather Reserve opens with one of the most realistic leather impressions I have smelled in a while.
Not abstract leather. Not something vaguely smoky that requires several paragraphs of olfactory imagination before we agree to call it leather.
New leather.
A new leather jacket. A pair of expensive shoes just taken out of their box. The smell of leather goods inside a luxury boutique.

There is something polished, dark and incredibly tactile about it from the very beginning.
And almost immediately, it brought back a very specific memory.
When I was a teenager, I used to shop at what was probably the trendiest clothing store in my hometown. Walking inside, before even looking at the clothes, you could smell the leather jackets hanging around the shop.
Tom Ford Ombré Leather Reserve gives me exactly that sensation.
Apparently perfume can also function as an unnecessarily expensive time machine.
A Brief Flash of Juniper
For a short moment after the opening, something cooler and more aromatic cuts through the leather.
It does not last particularly long, but I find that little contrast beautiful.
Tom Ford lists Silver Juniper ScentTrek™ among the key materials, alongside Deep Black Leather Accord, sandalwood, pinyon wood, white moss and violet leaf absolute. The brand describes the juniper facet as moving from fresh and aromatic toward a warmer, more resinous character. TOM FORD BEAUTY
That seems consistent with what I smell on my skin.
The freshness never turns Ombré Leather Reserve into a fresh fragrance. It simply lights up the composition for a moment before the leather takes control again.
And the leather definitely takes control.
Almost a Leather Solinote
On my skin, Tom Ford Ombré Leather Reserve develops in a relatively monolithic way.
I do not mean that as criticism.
Quite the opposite.
It almost behaves like a leather solinote, where one central accord remains the protagonist while smaller details shift around it.
The leather never really leaves.
The aromatic freshness appears briefly. There are woody nuances underneath it. At times I also pick up something slightly dirtier and less polished, and that little rough edge is precisely what keeps the fragrance from becoming too perfect.
Because perfect leather can become sterile.
This one has a pulse.
Tom Ford describes Reserve as a woody leather composition inspired by the high desert of the American West, with pinyon wood and sandalwood surrounding an intensified black leather accord. TOM FORD BEAUTY
On me, though, the desert remains scenery.
The leather is the main character.
And Yes, Tom Ford Ombré Leather Reserve Is Extremely Sexy
This is Tom Ford.
Sexy is practically part of the job description.
Ombré Leather Reserve has that familiar Tom Ford ability to smell luxurious without becoming polite.
There is something confident about it, slightly dirty, very physical and quite unapologetic.
It is not a fragrance trying to whisper sophistication from the other side of the room.
It knows you can smell it.
For at least the first two hours, I found it very clearly present around me, almost as if the fragrance were standing beside me judging my poor financial decisions regarding perfume.
Which, frankly, would be justified.
Performance From a 3 ml Sample
Performance needs a little context here.
I tested Ombré Leather Reserve for the first time, using two sprays from a small 3 ml sample atomizer.
Anyone who regularly uses samples knows that those tiny sprayers usually deliver considerably less fragrance than a proper full-size atomizer.
Even with that limited application, Ombré Leather Reserve remained very clearly detectable on my skin after four hours.
During roughly the first two hours, its presence around me was particularly noticeable.
That does not allow me to declare a universal twelve-hour longevity figure, nor would I want to. Skin, application and environment can change the experience considerably.
But considering how little product I actually applied, the performance was more than convincing.
I can only imagine what happens when this is sprayed properly from the full-size bottle.
A horrifying thought for both the room and my credit card.

Luxury Without Opulence
What I particularly enjoy about Ombré Leather Reserve is its interpretation of luxury.
This does not smell luxurious because it is overloaded with sweetness, richness or decorative excess.
There is no olfactory chandelier hanging from the ceiling.
Instead, it gives me a different type of luxury.
Dark leather. Clean lines. Expensive materials. Confidence.
It is luxurious because it feels tactile and beautifully constructed, not because it tries to smell like everything expensive at once.
And sometimes it is nice to wear that kind of energy on your skin, even if only for a few hours.
A Different Kind of Leather
Leather can obviously go in completely different directions.
If you want another interpretation of the material, my article of Guerlain Black Perfecto explores leather from a very different angle.
Same idea on paper.
Very different perfume.
And that is probably one of the reasons leather remains such an interesting material in perfumery.
What About the Rest of the Ombré Leather Family?
I already own Eau d’Ombré Leather, which from memory feels like one of the lighter interpretations of the line, with a softer vanilla-like facet.
But I want to smell it again properly before making direct comparisons.
More importantly, the perfumery has already prepared samples of the other Ombré Leather versions for me.
So I am going to test each one individually before deciding where Reserve actually sits within the family.
Tom Ford currently presents Ombré Leather as a collection built around its black leather signature, with the different versions modifying the surrounding materials and intensity. TOM FORD BEAUTY
Which creates a completely unnecessary but obviously essential future project:
finding my favorite Ombré Leather.
The slight problem is that I am already worried the answer might be all of them.
Will I Add Ombré Leather Reserve to My Collection?
Linda, do we really need this section?
Yes.
Almost certainly.
I loved the opening. I love the realism of the leather accord. I love the fleeting aromatic freshness. I love the slightly dirty edge that appears during the development.
And I particularly love how confidently the fragrance commits to its central idea.
Ombré Leather Reserve does not need a dramatic transformation to remain interesting.
It smells like leather.
Very, very good leather.
Sometimes that is enough.
